Clay Bar Uses

Once you learn to use a clay bar on your car or truck, you will love what you can do for your automobile's finish. There is a definite technique to using a clay bar and if you don't use it correctly you can botch your vehicle's paint job.

First, the surface that you're using the clay bar on must be made ready. Don't work in direct sunlight and don't use a clay bar on a hot day as the heat will cause the lubricant you use with the clay bar to evaporate too quickly and you will not get optimum results.

Simply roll the clay between your palms until the warmth of your hands leaves the clay soft and pliable. Then roll into a rough and ready round shape that fits within your hand.

Next, just spray a little of the clay lubricant on a small area of your car and run the clay back and forth over it with a light, yet constant pressure. If the lubricant begins to evaporate, spray a little more on. Never use a clay bar on a "dry" area of your vehicle, as you'll wreck your paintjob.

After you have "clayed" the area on your vehicle, run your hand over and make sure you didn't miss any areas. You will feel a very distinct difference between areas that are clayed on your car and areas that are not.

Stop every so often and check your clay bar for particles. Particles can scratch and mar your paint job. Remove any particles and re-knead your clay bar as necessary. Work in small areas around your car. Wipe any clay residue off as you go with a soft microfiber towel and buff to a nice lustrous shine.

When you're done claying, wash your car once again to remove any lubricant residue. After washing, go over your finish with a pre-waxing cleaner and then seal with a good wax or sealant. Do this on a regular basis and you will have one sharp ride!
