How to Protect Your Tires

How to Protect Your Tires

Automobile tires have a lot riding on them, and they deserve our efforts to protect them from the elements, and the abuse we and, our atmosphere, put them through.

Left alone, car tires dry out. They discolor over time, crack and split. It's called dry rot and is caused by sun damage and other pollutants in our atmosphere. The effects of the sun and ozone together work to break down car tires. Protection from these damaging agents is vital to the good health of your tires.

Simply put, the sun is constantly assaulting car tires and breaking down the tire and it's polymers. To keep your tires safe, simple steps can be taken to protect them from the sun's damaging rays.

Tire manufacturers add a wax compound to their formulas to protect tires from ozone damage. Water washes away the natural oils and waxes in rubber that keep it elastic. So our job is to protect and maintain that elasticity, which protects the tires from breaking down, cracking and fading.

An easy way to protect your car's tires is with Super Blue Tire Gloss. Super Blue can be applied simply with a sprayer or sponge applicator, and then wiped down with a soft cloth. Super Blue is effective at repelling water. It dries fast and protects your tires with a long lasting, high gloss that looks great while working hard.

Choosing a tire protection agent is important. It must be long lasting, effective at maintaining the elasticity of the tire, and provide superior protection from the elements. Many people don't think twice about protecting their tires, but, when you think about it, they are the foundation of your car. It only takes a few minutes to apply a protectant like Super Blue.

How to Wash and Dry Your Car or Truck

There is a right way to wash and dry your car or truck to prevent scratches and damage to the finish. Plan for a weekly washing for your car or truck to protect it from corrosion caused by bugs and air pollution.

Soft, sea sponges and sheepskin or cotton chenille wash mitts make the job of washing your car or truck easier. These sponges and mitts gently rub debris from your car or truck's finish without scratching the paint.

Always wash your car or truck from top to bottom. This way, the dirt runs down, and away from the areas that you have worked so hard to clean. Only wash your vehicles with a specially formulated car wash product like Lane's Wash & Shine Car Soap, not dish soap, which may be harmful to your paint job. Start out with a good rinsing from the hose. It will help loosen particles and make your job easier.

Many people neglect to think about the quality of the water they use to wash their car or truck. Dirt and debris ends up gathering and swirling around in that bucket. It gathers on your mitt as you wash the car or truck, then rinses off into the water. Be sure to change your water frequently or consider using a grit guard to keep from gathering that debris onto your sponge and rubbing it into your paint.

Tires need special attention during that weekly car or truck washing routine. The buildup of grit and grime can be a nightmare. Use a good wheel brush to wash away the crud and finish with a professional tire protectant.

For rinsing, get out the hose again, and gently wash away the suds. Your car or truck is ready to dry off, but be gentle! That towel can rub in the swirly scratches you worked so hard to avoid. Get a good squeegee to remove excess water.

A good weekly wash can keep your car or truck looking great for many years.

How to Clean Your Chrome Wheels

Cleaning your chrome wheels is the most important part of maintaining their appearance. For normal cleaning issues, use a non-alcohol glass cleaner and a soft rag to clean the chrome without damaging it. If your chrome wheels are really gunky, you may need to use an old toothbrush to remove the debris. Harsh chemicals are not a good idea as they could eat into the chrome, leaving unsightly blemishes where shiny, clean chrome should be.

Chrome can easily be scratched by anything abrasive. So make sure any brushes you use are soft, rather than stiff. Cleaners should not be gritty. Be careful with polishes as they do contain a certain amount of grit. They can leave behind scratches that you didn't bargain for.

It's a good idea to spray chrome cleaners on a rag first, and then use the rag to wipe down the wheels. This way you avoid spraying unintentional targets and keep the cleaner on the chrome wheels where you want it.

Normal wear and tear is hard on chrome because your chrome wheels are exposed to brake dust every time you drive. A special chrome cleaner may be necessary to remove tough substances like road tar. Keep an eye out for tar on your wheels, and remove it promptly. Be gentle as rubbing too hard can remove the chrome itself from the wheels.

Exposure to the elements can be hard on your chrome wheels. Snowy driving conditions can be particular bad as the road salts are very corrosive to chrome. Be sure to clean them frequently in the winter to keep this from happening to you. Some people even choose to remove their chrome wheels for the winter to avoid exposure to road salt. If you do, be sure to store them in a heated, well ventilated room.
