If your car has a dark exterior, you are very well acquainted with the maddening problem of swirl marks. They tend to show up in bright sunlight and can make the best detail job look really shoddy.
The number one cause of swirl marks is small scratches in your car's paint. Essentially, when you're detailing your car, you're making the scratches in the finish of your car worse by not fixing the scratches when you detail. Another reason is poor detailing practices, using a rubbing compound will remedy the problem with the swirl marks themselves. Using a rubbing compound to remove swirl marks involves a few steps and it's not hard to do. Rubbing compound works by being gently abrasive to your car's paint and smoothes the paint, thereby removing scratches and marks.
Before your detail, make sure your car's finish absolutely clean. Use a good car washing soap and grease cutter when you're washing your vehicle. Next, use rubbing compound and a low speed polisher. Take your time and do small areas of your car at a time. It works best to move the polisher in a figure-8 pattern and move light and quick to avoid burning your car's finish. Moving your polisher from side to side will cause your polisher to possibly stop and when the polisher stops it can cause burning to your car's finish.
You may use Lane's Super Cut Rubbing Compound as often as needed to remove those nasty little swirl marks. Scratches have a way of happening to even the most careful car owner and so it is a good thing to learn to use a rubbing compound on your own.
After using the rubbing compound, use a microfiber towel (the towel from your bathroom no matter how new will leave lint) to remove the dust from using the rubbing compound. When your finish is dust free, it is time to wax! Apply the wax by hand and all 10 minutes or so between coats. Use a gentle, circular motion when applying the waxy to keep those swirl marks off the finish of your car!
